Ministry of Commerce Addresses Welfare Card Misuse in Buriram

The Thai Ministry of Commerce has issued a clarification regarding a dispute involving a state welfare cardholder in Buriram province. According to a report by Khaosod Online, a resident of Prakhon Chai district alleged that a local shop deducted 1,000 baht from his welfare card despite him only purchasing 128 baht worth of goods. The cardholder discovered the discrepancy two days later when attempting to use his remaining balance elsewhere.

Upon confronting the shop, the owner claimed the transaction was mutually agreed upon, though the customer disputed this, alleging that 99 baht was withheld as a tax fee. The shop eventually returned the difference in cash. The Buriram Provincial Commerce Office has since intervened, stating that such practices—where shops deduct more than the actual purchase price and return cash—are prohibited. Both the cardholder and the merchant risk losing their eligibility for the state welfare program if they participate in these unauthorized transactions.
