Koh Kret’s 'Rang Daeng' Tea Receives GI Status

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has officially registered 'Rang Daeng Koh Kret' as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. This marks the fifth GI item for Nonthaburi province, highlighting the unique cultural heritage of the Mon community residing on Koh Kret.

Rang Daeng tea is derived from the local Rang Daeng plant, which thrives in the nutrient-rich, alluvial soil of the Chao Phraya River basin. The tea is processed using traditional Mon techniques, resulting in a golden-amber infusion known for its mild, sweet flavor and lack of bitterness. Beyond its cultural significance, the product is marketed for its health benefits, including potential lipid-lowering properties.

For residents and travelers, this designation serves as a mark of authenticity and quality, potentially increasing the availability of the tea as a premium local souvenir. The DIP expects this registration to stimulate the local economy by approximately 8 million baht per year, further supporting sustainable cultural tourism in the area.

While the GI status provides legal protection for the product's origin and production methods, it remains to be seen how this will impact the long-term scalability of production and whether the increased demand will lead to a broader expansion of tea-related tourism infrastructure on the island.
