Udon Thani Police Rescue Student from Sophisticated Call Center Scam

On August 3, 2026, police officials in Udon Thani announced the rescue of a university student who had been coerced into isolating herself in a hotel room. According to Khaosod Online, the incident began on July 31 when the victim received a call from individuals posing as mobile network representatives. The scammers claimed her phone number was linked to fraudulent activities and directed her to contact the Nang Rong Police Station in Buriram.

To build credibility, the perpetrators used the name of a real police officer and provided a fake contact number. Once the victim established contact, she was instructed to add a Line account labeled 'Nang Rong Police Station.' During subsequent video calls, the scammers staged a fake office environment, complete with background noise and individuals appearing to be officers, to convince the student of their legitimacy. They further presented forged arrest warrants and asset seizure documents to intimidate her. The criminals then forced the student to remain in a hotel room, maintaining a 24-hour video connection, while they contacted her mother to demand a ransom of 140,000 baht.

This case highlights the sophisticated methods used by criminal syndicates to target individuals through psychological manipulation. For residents and travelers, it serves as a reminder that official entities do not conduct investigations via video calls or demand payments through private messaging apps. Authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of the criminal network or the status of the suspects involved.
