Thai Interior Ministry Targets Removal of 5,925 Corrupt Local Officials by August

On August 3, 2026, Deputy Interior Minister Worasit Leangprasit announced that the Ministry of Interior is finalizing the removal of 5,925 local government officials involved in a local examination corruption scandal. According to Khaosod Online, the investigation has confirmed the identities of those who manipulated their scores.

The process for dismissal is currently underway. The Central Committee for Local Government Examination (KST) is scheduled to meet on August 5 to finalize guidelines, followed by a review by the Central Committee for Local Government Officials (K-Klang) on August 6. Once approved, the findings will be forwarded to provincial committees and individual local administrative organizations to execute the removals. Worasit emphasized that all individuals involved will face criminal prosecution.

For residents and expatriates, this development highlights a significant administrative overhaul within local government bodies. While the removal of these officials aims to restore integrity to public service, it may lead to temporary disruptions in local administrative offices as positions are vacated and subsequently refilled.

It remains to be confirmed how quickly the local administrative organizations will complete the actual dismissal process once they receive the official notifications from the provincial committees. The Ministry has been addressing this issue since June, and the timeline for the final removal of all 5,925 individuals is expected to conclude within August.
