King’s Cup Sepak Takraw Draws Record International Interest

According to Khaosod Online, the 39th King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championship is set to take place from August 4–11 at Fashion Island in Bangkok. Thana Chaiprasit, President of the Takraw Association of Thailand, expressed pride in the event's popularity, noting that 19 nations are participating—a figure that exceeds the number of countries competing in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan next month.

For residents and visitors in Bangkok, this tournament highlights the enduring prestige of the King’s Cup, which has been a cornerstone of the sport for four decades. Dato Abdul Halim Kader, Secretary-General of the International Sepaktakraw Federation, emphasized that the high turnout underscores the global significance of this specific competition.

Regarding the upcoming Asian Games, Thana addressed concerns about potential athlete suspensions. He confirmed that the association has prepared a reserve list, training 19–20 athletes for a 14-person squad to ensure readiness should any primary players be ruled ineligible. Looking further ahead, discussions are underway with the Olympic Council of Asia regarding the inclusion of sepak takraw in the 2030 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. While the sport’s presence in the Middle East remains a topic of negotiation, the current focus remains on the successful execution of the King’s Cup and the preparation for the Japanese games.
