Dan Nok Special Economic Zone Faces Economic Downturn

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on July 31, 2026, the Dan Nok Special Economic Zone in Sadao, Songkhla, is experiencing a severe economic slump. Local business owners, including shopkeeper Wannunuree Sama-alee, report that tourist numbers have plummeted by 80%, leading to a 90% decline in sales.

This downturn is attributed to the opening of a new Sadao border checkpoint and subsequent changes to traffic routing. While the old checkpoint remains open, current traffic management directs buses and vans exclusively to the new facility. Although private cars and motorcycles are permitted to use the old checkpoint, travelers face long wait times due to limited immigration staff and inspection lanes. In some instances, officials have reportedly directed travelers to use the new checkpoint instead.

For travelers and residents, this shift has transformed the once-vibrant Dan Nok area into a quiet zone, with local entrepreneurs warning that hotels, shops, and entertainment venues may be forced to close permanently if the situation does not improve by the New Year. It remains to be confirmed whether authorities will adjust traffic management policies or immigration staffing at the old checkpoint to alleviate the economic impact on the Dan Nok business community.
