Ebola Outbreak Escalates in Democratic Republic of Congo

According to a report by Khaosod Online citing AP, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing a critical escalation in its Ebola outbreak. As of July 31, 2026, government data confirms 3,442 cases and 1,521 deaths. The mortality rate has surged by 50 percent in just one week, highlighting the severity of the current emergency.

The outbreak, involving the Bundibugyo strain, currently lacks an approved vaccine or treatment. Health authorities are struggling to manage the crisis, with contact tracing efforts reaching only 78 percent of exposed individuals—well below the 95 percent target required to effectively halt transmission. Currently, 797 patients are in isolation or hospital care, while 615 have recovered.

For travelers and residents, the situation is concentrated in the Ituri province, which accounts for nearly 90 percent of cases. However, infections have been confirmed in five other provinces, including the major city of Kisangani.

It remains to be confirmed how the virus will impact neighboring regions, including Uganda, as health officials continue to monitor the spread.
