Thai Excise Department Seizes Over 400,000 Packs of Illegal Cigarettes

According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai Excise Department has intensified its nationwide campaign against illegal goods, specifically targeting smuggled cigarettes. Director-General Pornchai Teeravech stated that in July 2026 alone, authorities seized over 408,000 packs of illicit cigarettes. This initiative is part of a collaborative effort involving the Royal Thai Police, the Customs Department, and military units to disrupt tax evasion networks that undermine state revenue and legitimate businesses.

For residents and travelers, this crackdown highlights the government's ongoing focus on enforcing excise regulations. While the possession of legal tobacco products remains unaffected, the prevalence of illicit trade suggests that authorities are maintaining a high level of vigilance regarding the sale and distribution of non-taxed goods.

Data covering the first ten months of the 2026 fiscal year (October 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026) shows that the Excise Department handled 32,812 cases, resulting in 901.82 million baht in fines collected, with total estimated fines reaching 4.5 billion baht. Tobacco-related offenses accounted for over 61% of these cases. It remains to be confirmed how these enforcement measures will evolve in the coming months and whether further legislative or operational adjustments will be implemented to address the persistent issue of cigarette smuggling.
